Trails

One of the best ways to experience the beauty of the Azores is to explore its many trails. The Azores boasts more than 500 kilometres of marked trails, with options to suit all levels of hikers. From easy family walks to challenging treks across rugged terrain, there is something for everyone.

Some of the most popular trails include the Sete Cidades Trail on São Miguel, the Caldeira Velha Trail on Faial, and the Levada do Norte Trail on Pico. The Sete Cidades Trail is an easy family walk along the rim of the Sete Cidades caldera. It offers amazing views of the twin lakes of Lagoa Azul and Lagoa Verde, as well as the surrounding volcanic landscape.

The Caldeira Velha Trail is a more challenging hike, with steep climbs and descents. It offers spectacular views of Faial’s volcanic crater, as well as the surrounding island.

The Levada do Norte Trail is a long and challenging trek, traversing the slopes of Pico, the highest mountain in Portugal. It offers stunning views of the surrounding islands and the sea.

No matter which trail you choose, you will be rewarded with breathtaking views and plenty of opportunities to spot local wildlife. The Azores is home to a variety of birds, including the rare Azores Bullfinch, as well as dolphins, whales, and monk seals. You may also spot wild horses, cows, and sheep grazing on the hillsides. Hiking in the Azores is a great way to explore the islands and experience their unique culture and wildlife. So, if you’re looking for an adventure, why not take a hike on one of the Azores‘ trails?
